HARMONIZED STANDARDS FOR PRESSES

For a couple of years I’ve been working with presses building and CE marking.

There is a number of technical standards for presses.

There are well known standards like:

EN 692:2005 (Mechanical Presses),

EN 693:2001 (Hydraulic Presses) and

EN 13736:2003 (Pneumatic Presses).

They have been superseded by EN ISO 16092-1:2018 which covers all mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic presses but on the list of harmonized standards to MD there are only part 1 (General safety) and part 3 (for hydraulic presses) while all the three (EN 692:2005 and EN 693:2001 and EN 13736:2003) still exist (on the harmonized standards list).

Also, (apart of harmonized list) you can find ISO 16092-2 (for mechanical presses), ISO 16092-3 (for hydraulic presses) and ISO 16092-4 (for pneumatic presses) and they are all C type standards.

Which standards should be used to demonstrate conformity to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC ?

Let’s look at it closer. There is a remark in EN ISO 16092-1 saying: “To confer a presumption of conformity with the relevant essential requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC, this standard (providing general/common requirements for a whole machine family) has to be applied together with one of those standards as specified is the scope (providing specific requirements for a particular category of machinery within this family), once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Communities under Directive 2006/42/EC.”

Let’s go see for the standards mentioned in quotes.

There are: ISO 16092-2 (for mechanical presses), ISO 16092-3 (for hydraulic presses) and ISO 16092-4 (for pneumatic presses)

To make the research more clear, let’s analyze them by a press type.

MECHANICAL PRESSES

EN 692:2005

HYDRAULIC PRESSES

Harmonized

Presumption of conformity

EN ISO 16092-1:2018

EN ISO 16092-3

OBSOLETE

EN 693:2001+A2

YES

Since 18/11/2011
till 19/09/2021

OK

Comment: there are two detailed standards for hydraulic presses. Till 19/09/2021 we can follow any of them to presume conformity with the directive. After this date only EN 16092-3 will be useful.

PNEUMATIC PRESSES

Harmonized

Presumption of conformity

EN ISO 16092-1:2018

YES

Since 19/03/2019
till -

OK

ISO 16092-4

NO

N/A

NO

EN 13736:2003+A1

YES

Since 29/12/2009
till 19/09/2021

OK

Ones your press model have been placed on the market demonstrating conformity to harmonized standards which are presumed as conforming the Directive then you can continue to produce and declare this machine under the same standards (even after they have been withdrawn or superseded). The same regards directives.
